The UK has an established artificial intelligence sector spanning machine learning, software engineering, data science, AI research, computer vision, robotics, natural-language processing and AI product development.
Demand for AI skills remains significant. The UK government’s AI Labour Market Survey 2025, published in January 2026, found that 97% of surveyed organisations identified at least one AI skills gap, while 57% reported a technical AI skills gap. The research was commissioned to identify shortages and changing skills requirements across the UK’s AI labour market.
For international candidates, however, finding an AI vacancy and obtaining permission to work in the UK are separate processes.
British citizens generally do not need a work visa. Irish citizens also have the right to work in the UK without sponsorship. People with Indefinite Leave to Remain, and eligible holders of settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, also do not normally need employer sponsorship.
Most other foreign nationals who want to relocate to the UK for an AI job need an immigration route that permits employment.
The main routes worth investigating are the Skilled Worker visa, Scale-up Worker visa and Global Talent visa.

Your visa application is based on the actual occupation and its official SOC 2020 occupation code, not simply the marketing title used in a job advertisement. GOV.UK’s Skilled Occupations rules provide the occupation codes used for immigration purposes.
That distinction matters.
An employer might advertise a position as an “AI Specialist,” while the sponsored occupation is classified under a particular software, data, scientific or engineering occupation code.
Always ask the employer for the occupation code before relying on a sponsorship promise.
Who Needs a UK Work Visa?
UK and Irish citizens
British citizens can work in the UK without immigration sponsorship.
Irish citizens generally have the same freedom to work in the UK under the Common Travel Area arrangements.
EU, EEA and Swiss nationals
Brexit changed the position for most EU, EEA and Swiss citizens.
A person who moved to the UK after the end of free movement generally needs the appropriate immigration permission to work.
People who already have valid status under the EU Settlement Scheme may not need employer sponsorship.
Other international applicants
If you are applying from countries such as Nigeria, India, Pakistan, South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Bangladesh, the Philippines or elsewhere outside the UK and Ireland, you need to establish your immigration status before accepting employment.
For many professional AI roles, the Skilled Worker visa is the most straightforward employer-sponsored route.
Skilled Worker Visa for AI Jobs
The Skilled Worker visa allows an eligible foreign worker to work for a UK employer that has been approved by the Home Office.
You need:
- An eligible occupation
- A confirmed job offer
- An approved UK sponsor
- A Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)
- The required salary
- The required English-language ability
- The other applicable visa requirements.
The employer does not simply write “visa sponsorship available” on LinkedIn and create a visa.
The employer must hold the appropriate Home Office sponsor licence and issue the required electronic Certificate of Sponsorship after the sponsorship requirements have been met.
UK Skilled Worker Salary Threshold
For the current Skilled Worker rules, the standard minimum salary is generally £41,700 per year or the applicable going rate for the occupation, whichever is higher. Some applicants qualify for specified salary discounts, so the exact calculation depends on the applicant’s circumstances and the occupation code.
The going rate matters for AI professionals because different occupation codes have different salary requirements.
The government publishes the current going rates in the Skilled Occupations tables.
Do not judge eligibility using an old blog post quoting a previous £26,200, £29,000 or £38,700 threshold. UK immigration salary rules have changed.
Check the current GOV.UK rules when you receive an offer.
English-Language Requirement
Most new Skilled Worker applicants must prove their English ability.
For applications under the current rules, the usual requirement is B2 level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
You may meet the requirement through an eligible degree taught in English, a UK qualification, an approved English test or another permitted route. Certain nationals are exempt.
If you have a degree from outside the UK that was taught in English, you may need an Ecctis assessment to confirm the qualification and language of instruction.
Global Talent Visa for AI Professionals
The Global Talent visa is particularly relevant to senior AI researchers, technical leaders and people with strong evidence of exceptional or promising talent.
The route covers digital technology, including artificial intelligence.
Unlike the Skilled Worker route, Global Talent does not require you to have a sponsored job offer from a particular employer.
You can work as an employee, become self-employed or establish a business, subject to the visa rules. There is also no minimum salary requirement or English-language requirement for the Global Talent digital-technology route.
If you have won an eligible prestigious prize, you can apply without endorsement.
Otherwise, you normally need an endorsement demonstrating that you are a leader or potential leader in digital technology.
Evidence can include professional achievements, significant technical contributions, publications, products, research, awards, recommendations and other evidence specified by the endorsement criteria.
This route is therefore very different from employer sponsorship.
Scale-up Worker Visa for AI Jobs
The Scale-up Worker visa can also be relevant to AI professionals joining qualifying high-growth UK companies.
The employer must be an approved Scale-up sponsor, and the job must be eligible.
For the current rules, the sponsored role must meet the applicable salary requirement, which is generally the higher of £39,100 per year or the occupation’s going rate.
The employer must provide a qualifying job offer for at least six months.
The initial visa lasts two years. After the first six months, the route gives the worker more flexibility to change employment, subject to the immigration rules.
A Scale-up sponsor must appear as an approved sponsor for the relevant route.
Does a UK Employer Have to Advertise the AI Job First?
There is an important difference between the UK’s current sponsorship system and older advice found online.
The UK does not operate a universal Resident Labour Market Test requiring every employer to advertise an AI job for a fixed period before sponsoring a foreign worker.
The old Resident Labour Market Test was removed.
Instead, employers must meet the Home Office sponsorship requirements, including holding the appropriate sponsor licence and ensuring that the job meets the relevant route and occupation requirements.
The Home Office publishes a register of licensed sponsors showing organisations licensed to sponsor workers and the routes for which they hold approval.
An AI candidate should therefore focus on a more useful question:
Is this employer licensed to sponsor the route required for this position?
How to Find AI Jobs With UK Sponsorship
Step 1: Build a UK-focused AI CV
Your CV should immediately show:
- AI/ML specialisation
- Years of professional experience
- Programming languages
- Python, R, Java, C++ or other relevant languages
- Machine-learning frameworks
- TensorFlow, PyTorch or equivalent
- Cloud platforms
- AWS, Azure or Google Cloud experience
- Generative AI experience
- LLM development
- MLOps
- Data engineering
- Research publications
- Patents or technical contributions
- Major AI projects
- Quantifiable business or research results
Do not send the same generic CV to every employer.
Match the CV to the job description.
Step 2: Search legitimate UK job sources
Search:
- GOV.UK Find a Job
- LinkedIn Jobs
- Indeed UK
- Company career pages
- University and research-institution vacancies
- Specialist technology recruitment firms
- AI and machine-learning research organisations
For sponsorship-focused searches, use terms such as:
“AI engineer visa sponsorship UK”
“machine learning engineer Skilled Worker sponsorship UK”
“AI research scientist UK visa sponsorship”
“machine learning jobs UK sponsorship”
“data scientist Skilled Worker visa UK”
Then independently verify the employer’s sponsorship status.
Step 3: Check the sponsor register
Before relying on a sponsorship claim, check the employer against the official Register of Licensed Sponsors.
The register identifies organisations licensed to sponsor workers and the relevant route and rating.
If a recruiter claims that a company can sponsor you but the company cannot be verified as an appropriate licensed sponsor, stop and investigate before providing money or documents.
Step 4: Confirm the occupation code
Ask:
“What SOC 2020 occupation code will be used for my sponsorship?”
The code determines whether the job is eligible and which salary rules apply.
Do not accept a recruiter saying:
“The occupation code doesn’t matter.”
It does matter.
The UK immigration system uses SOC 2020 occupation codes to determine eligibility and going rates.
Step 5: Obtain the genuine employment offer
A legitimate offer should identify:
- Employer’s legal name
- Job title
- Work location
- Salary
- Working hours
- Employment conditions
- Occupation code
- Sponsorship arrangement
- Start date
The employer should also be able to explain the sponsorship process.
The Certificate of Sponsorship
The Certificate of Sponsorship is an electronic record rather than a paper certificate.
For a Skilled Worker applying from outside the UK, the employer must obtain the appropriate defined CoS through the Home Office sponsorship system and assign it to the worker.
The worker then uses the CoS reference number in the visa application.
The CoS contains information about the sponsored job, including the employer and occupation details.
Your employer’s sponsor licence number will also appear in the information used for your visa application.
Step-by-Step UK AI Work Visa Process
1. Find an eligible AI vacancy
Identify a role that matches your qualifications and experience.
2. Verify the employer
Check the company on the official sponsor register where sponsorship is required.
3. Confirm the occupation code
Ask the employer which SOC 2020 code applies.
4. Check the salary
Compare the proposed salary against the current Skilled Worker or Scale-up salary rules and the applicable going rate.
5. Receive the employment offer
Get the terms in writing.
6. Employer assigns the Certificate of Sponsorship
The sponsor creates and assigns the relevant electronic CoS through the Home Office system.
7. Prepare your visa documents
Depending on the route, documents can include:
- Passport
- CoS reference
- Proof of English
- Job title
- Salary information
- Occupation code
- Sponsor licence information
- Financial evidence where required
- TB test certificate where applicable
- Qualification evidence where applicable
- Certified translations where documents are not in English or Welsh.
8. Apply online
A Skilled Worker applicant outside the UK applies online through GOV.UK.
You must prove your identity either through the UK Immigration: ID Check app or by attending a visa application centre for biometrics, depending on your circumstances.
9. Wait for the UKVI decision
For applications from outside the UK, GOV.UK currently states that applicants usually receive a decision within three weeks after completing the application, proving identity and submitting the required documents, although individual cases can take longer.
AI Recruitment Scams to Avoid
AI jobs attract international applicants, which also attracts fraudulent recruiters.
Red Flag 1: “Pay for your sponsorship”
A genuine UK sponsor may have legitimate immigration and recruitment costs, but a stranger demanding thousands of pounds for a guaranteed Certificate of Sponsorship is a major warning sign.
A CoS is issued through the employer’s official sponsorship system. It is not a secret document that an agent can purchase and hand to you.
Red Flag 2: Guaranteed visa approval
No recruiter can guarantee that UK Visas and Immigration will approve your application.
The sponsor provides the employment sponsorship. UKVI makes the immigration decision.
Red Flag 3: Employer cannot be verified
If the supposed sponsor cannot be found on the appropriate official sponsor register, investigate before proceeding.
Do not rely on a recruiter sending you a screenshot.
Red Flag 4: Tourist visa employment
A recruiter telling you to enter the UK as a visitor and start your AI job while the company “sorts out sponsorship” is not giving you a legitimate employment pathway.
Obtain the correct permission before starting work.
How to Recognise a Genuine AI Job Offer
A legitimate offer should survive independent verification.
Check:
Employer: Can you verify the company’s legal identity?
Sponsor: Is the employer appropriately licensed?
Occupation: What SOC 2020 code is being used?
Salary: Does the pay meet the immigration rules?
Contract: Are the job duties and employment terms clearly stated?
CoS: Will the employer assign the required Certificate of Sponsorship?
Visa: Are you applying through GOV.UK and UKVI?
If the recruiter refuses to provide basic information and instead pressures you to transfer money immediately, stop the application.
AI Skills That Can Strengthen Your UK Job Search
The UK government’s AI labour-market research identifies technical and non-technical skills gaps across the sector. The 2025 survey found that 57% of surveyed businesses reported technical AI skills gaps, while 30% reported non-technical gaps.
For technical candidates, useful areas to demonstrate include:
- Python
- Machine learning
- Deep learning
- PyTorch
- TensorFlow
- SQL
- Data engineering
- Cloud computing
- MLOps
- Generative AI
- Large language models
- Natural-language processing
- Computer vision
- Reinforcement learning
- AI evaluation
- Responsible AI
- Model deployment
- Data governance
Your portfolio should show what you actually built.
A GitHub repository, deployed model, research paper, technical case study or documented production system can give employers concrete evidence of your skills.
Final Checklist for Foreign AI Job Seekers
Before accepting a UK AI job, confirm:
- The employer is genuine.
- The employer is appropriately licensed if sponsorship is required.
- The job has an eligible SOC 2020 occupation code.
- The salary satisfies the applicable immigration rules.
- The employer will issue the correct Certificate of Sponsorship where required.
- You meet the English-language requirement unless exempt.
- You understand which visa route applies.
- You apply through GOV.UK/UKVI.
- You do not pay an unknown person for a guaranteed visa.
- You do not start work without the required immigration permission.
The UK AI sector has documented skills shortages, but international candidates still need to match three separate requirements: a genuine job, an eligible immigration route and the required salary/skill criteria. The Skilled Worker route requires an approved sponsor, eligible occupation, Certificate of Sponsorship and applicable salary threshold; Global Talent is available to qualifying leaders or potential leaders in digital technology, including AI; and Scale-up can apply to qualifying high-growth businesses and eligible high-skilled roles.
For foreign AI professionals, the safest process is simple: find the job, verify the employer, confirm the occupation code and salary, obtain the official sponsorship documentation, and submit the visa application through UKVI.
That is the difference between a genuine UK AI recruitment process and a sponsorship scam.
