The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is accepting applications for students who want to begin their studies in the 2027 academic year.

The application process is completed online, and UWC accepts applications from current Grade 12 learners, post-matric applicants, gap-year students, transfer applicants and international applicants.

For the 2027 undergraduate intake, applications opened on 1 April 2026. The general closing date is 30 September 2026, while applications for Bachelor of Dentistry and Bachelor of Oral Health close earlier on 31 August 2026. UWC also states that there is no application fee.

Applicants should apply well before the deadline because completing the online form alone is not necessarily enough for every applicant category. Where supporting documents are required, they must also be submitted for the application to be considered complete.

Key Application Dates

Estimated 2027 Opening and Closing Deadlines

The 2027 UWC undergraduate dates have already been published, so applicants should use the official dates rather than previous-year estimates.

UWC 2027 Undergraduate Application Dates:

  • Applications opened: 1 April 2026
  • General undergraduate closing date: 30 September 2026
  • Bachelor of Dentistry closing date: 31 August 2026
  • Bachelor of Oral Health closing date: 31 August 2026
  • Application fee: R0 — No application fee
  • Maximum programme choices: Two
  • Application method: Online

UWC encourages applicants to submit their applications well before the deadline.

Current Grade 12 applicants should be particularly careful about the deadline because UWC says final selection for these applicants takes place after the final Grade 12 results are released in January 2027.

Important: Not every UWC programme necessarily follows the general deadline. Dentistry and Oral Health have an earlier closing date, and selected postgraduate programmes can also close earlier. Always check the deadline for your specific programme.

Step-by-Step Online Application Process

How to Submit Your Application Online

UWC applications are submitted through the university’s official online application system.

Official UWC application portal:
UWC Online Application Portal

You can also access application information and programme details through the official UWC website:
UWC Apply – Official Website

UWC’s 2027 application guide recommends that applicants have their ID/passport number, valid email address, active cellphone number and parent/guardian contact details available before beginning.

Step 1: Choose Your Programme

Before starting the application, research the programme you want to study.

Use the official UWC programme information to check:

  • Programme name
  • Programme code
  • Faculty
  • Campus information
  • Programme-specific application deadline
  • Any additional documents or selection processes

UWC allows undergraduate applicants to select a maximum of two programme choices.

Think carefully about both choices before submitting the application.

Step 2: Prepare Your Information

Have the following information ready:

  • South African ID number, where applicable
  • Passport number for international applicants
  • Valid email address
  • Active cellphone number
  • School contact information
  • Parent or guardian contact details
  • Academic information
  • Previous tertiary-study information, where applicable

Use an email address and cellphone number that you check regularly.

UWC says application communication is sent by email, so using an incorrect or inactive email address can cause applicants to miss important messages.

Step 3: Start a New Online Application

Go to the official UWC online application portal.

If you are applying as a current Grade 12 learner, select the appropriate undergraduate programme application option.

Follow the instructions displayed by the portal and enter your personal details accurately.

UWC’s application guide instructs applicants to create a new application through the online portal and ensure that their contact details are correct.

Step 4: Complete Your Personal Information

Enter your personal details exactly as they appear on your official documents.

Check:

  • Full name
  • Surname
  • Date of birth
  • ID number or passport number
  • Citizenship
  • Email address
  • Cellphone number
  • Residential/contact information
  • Parent or guardian details where requested

Take your time with this section because mistakes in personal information can create problems later.

Step 5: Select Your Two Programme Choices

UWC permits applicants to choose up to two undergraduate programmes.

Before confirming your choices:

  • Check the exact programme name.
  • Check the programme code.
  • Confirm that the programme is still accepting applications.
  • Check whether it has an earlier deadline.
  • Consider your second choice carefully.

If you later change your mind about your programme choice, UWC advises applicants not to submit a completely new application. Instead, use the appropriate programme-change process before the closing date.

Step 6: Complete the Academic Information

Enter your school and academic information as requested.

For current Grade 12 applicants, provide the information available from your school.

For applicants who have already completed matric, provide your final school-leaving information.

If you have attended another university or tertiary institution, provide the relevant previous-study information.

Do not enter marks or qualifications that you cannot verify.

Step 7: Complete the Application Form

Work through every section of the online application.

Do not stop after entering your programme choices.

UWC states that an application is only considered complete when the online application has been successfully completed and the required documentation has been submitted where applicable.

Step 8: Accept the Terms and Conditions

One important step is often overlooked.

After completing the online application, UWC instructs applicants to click “ACCEPT” in the Terms and Conditions section to complete the application.

Simply entering information into the form is not enough.

Make sure you complete the final acceptance/submission stage.

Step 9: Submit Supporting Documents Where Required

The documents you need to submit depend on your applicant category.

Current Grade 12 applicants have fewer document requirements at the application stage, while post-matric, transfer and international applicants generally have additional documentation requirements.

UWC uses a separate document-upload portal for supporting documents:

UWC Supporting Document Upload Portal

Step 10: Keep Your Applicant Number

After completing the application, UWC sends an acknowledgement letter by email.

The acknowledgement contains your Applicant Number.

Keep this number safe because UWC says it is used when communicating with the university and when checking your application status.

Save the email and keep a copy of your application information.

Required Supporting Documents

The documents required depend on whether you are a current Grade 12 learner, post-matric applicant, transfer student or international applicant.

Current Grade 12 Applicants

If you are currently completing Grade 12, UWC’s current 2027 guidance says that no other supporting documents are required at this stage, apart from a signed POPIA consent form for applicants under 18.

This means current matriculants should not assume that they need to upload their Grade 11 report simply because another university requests one.

UWC states that final selection for current Grade 12 applicants will be based on the final Grade 12 results released in January 2027.

Applicants Under 18

If you are under 18 when applying:

  • Complete the required POPIA consent form.
  • Have it signed by the appropriate parent, guardian or responsible adult where required.
  • Upload/submit it according to UWC’s instructions.
  • Make sure it is submitted before the application deadline.

The UWC application portal specifically flags the consent requirement for applicants under 18.

Post-Matric and Gap-Year Applicants

Applicants who have already completed Grade 12 should prepare:

  • Certified copy of your National Senior Certificate (NSC) or Senior Certificate
  • Certified copy of your South African ID
  • Affidavit describing your activities since completing matric, such as a gap year or employment
  • Proof of upgraded/current NSC results, where applicable
  • Proof of previous tertiary studies, where applicable

UWC specifically states that a Statement of Results is not accepted for post-matric applicants; the official NSC or Senior Certificate is required.

The 2027 application guide also lists a certified ID, NSC/Senior Certificate, relevant academic records and information about post-matric activities among the documents for post-matric applicants.

Transfer Applicants

If you are applying to UWC from another university or tertiary institution, additional documents may be required.

These include:

  • Certified NSC or Senior Certificate
  • Certified ID
  • Official academic transcript
  • Certificate of conduct from your current/previous institution
  • Module content or yearbook descriptors for completed modules
  • Degree certificate, if applicable

UWC’s 2027 application guide specifies these documents for transfer applicants.

International Applicants

International applicants should prepare their foreign academic documentation well in advance.

UWC’s 2027 application guide states that international applicants need to submit their final school results to Universities South Africa (USAf) for evaluation/exemption, where applicable. UWC requires confirmation from USAf indicating that the applicant qualifies to study at a South African university.

International applicants should prepare:

  • Certified copy of passport or refugee permit
  • Final high-school qualification
  • Foreign school-leaving results
  • USAf evaluation/exemption documentation where required
  • Additional programme-specific documentation where applicable

Applicants should start the USAf process early because waiting until the UWC deadline may leave insufficient time to obtain the necessary confirmation.

What About Grade 11 Results?

For current Grade 12 applicants, UWC’s current 2027 application information does not require a Grade 11 report as a general supporting document at the application stage. UWC says no other documents are required at this stage, apart from the POPIA consent form for applicants under 18.

For post-matric applicants, UWC focuses on the official NSC/Senior Certificate and other relevant documents rather than a Grade 11 report.

Therefore, applicants should follow the UWC document checklist for their specific applicant category rather than uploading unnecessary documents.

What About Proof of Address?

Proof of address is not listed as a standard supporting document for every UWC undergraduate application.

Applicants should not assume that they must upload proof of address simply because another university asks for it.

The current UWC application information identifies documents according to applicant category, including ID, NSC/Senior Certificate, academic records and other relevant documentation.

If UWC specifically requests proof of address for your individual application or another university service, provide the document requested.

Do not confuse admission/application documents with documents that might later be required for:

  • Student accommodation
  • Financial aid
  • Student finance
  • Other administrative processes

Application Fee & Payment Details

Is the UWC Application Free?

Yes.

For the 2027 UWC application, applicants are not required to pay an application fee.

The official 2027 UWC application guide explicitly states that applicants are not required to pay an application fee, and the online application portal also displays “NO APPLICATION FEE IS PAYABLE.”

Application fee: R0

Do South African Applicants Pay an Application Fee?

No.

There is no application fee for the standard UWC online application.

This applies to applicants completing the normal undergraduate application process.

Do International Applicants Pay an Application Fee?

The UWC application process does not require an application fee.

However, international students may have other costs associated with their studies, including immigration, evaluation, visa, registration, tuition and accommodation-related costs.

These should not be confused with the R0 application fee.

Be Careful With Unofficial Payment Requests

Because UWC’s application is free, applicants should be cautious if someone asks for money to:

  • “Activate” an application
  • “Guarantee” admission
  • Submit an application on their behalf
  • Provide a special application link
  • Speed up admission
  • Secure a programme place

Use the official UWC application portal instead.

Do You Pay After Being Accepted?

An application being free does not mean that studying at UWC is free.

Students who receive an offer may subsequently have tuition, registration, accommodation and other university costs.

Financial-aid applicants should separately investigate NSFAS and other legitimate funding opportunities. UWC notes that NSFAS applications are handled through the NSFAS system rather than by UWC directly.

What Happens After You Apply?

After submitting your application, UWC sends an acknowledgement letter by email containing your applicant number.

Keep checking your email because UWC uses email to communicate application information.

You should:

  • Save your Applicant Number
  • Check your email regularly
  • Check your application status
  • Respond quickly if UWC requests additional information
  • Keep your cellphone number and email address updated

For current Grade 12 applicants, UWC states that final selection takes place after the final matric results are released in January 2027. Other applicants are expected to receive selection information earlier according to the university’s published process.

If you receive a firm offer, read the instructions carefully and accept the offer within the specified period. UWC’s application guide warns that failing to accept within the designated period can result in the offer expiring.

What If You Miss the UWC 2027 Application Deadline?

UWC’s general undergraduate closing date is 30 September 2026, while Dentistry and Oral Health close earlier on 31 August 2026.

If you miss the deadline, take these steps rather than paying an unofficial agent.

1. Check the Official UWC Website

First, check the official UWC admissions page for any announcement about:

  • Application extensions
  • Programme-specific changes
  • Reopened applications
  • New application opportunities

Do not rely on social-media posts or WhatsApp messages as confirmation of an extension.

2. Check Your Specific Programme

Do not assume that every programme has the same deadline.

Dentistry and Oral Health, for example, have an earlier 31 August 2026 deadline.

If you missed a programme-specific deadline, check whether another programme remains open.

3. Contact UWC Directly

If you experienced a technical problem or believe your application was submitted incorrectly, contact UWC.

UWC Contact Centre:

  • Telephone: +27 21 959 3900/01
  • Email: admissions@uwc.ac.za
  • Hours: Monday–Friday, 09:00–16:00, excluding public holidays

When contacting the university, provide your:

Advertisements
  • Full name
  • Applicant number, if available
  • ID/passport details where appropriate
  • Programme choice
  • Description of the problem
  • Screenshots of any technical error

4. Do Not Submit Multiple Applications

If you want to change your programme choice, UWC advises applicants to use the programme change request process rather than submitting a completely new application.

Submitting duplicate applications can create unnecessary confusion.

5. Do Not Pay an Agent

There is no UWC application fee.

Therefore, be particularly careful if someone claims that you must pay them to submit a late application or guarantee admission.

Use official UWC channels only.

6. Consider Other Institutions

If UWC confirms that the application period has closed and no official late application route is available, consider universities or colleges that still have legitimate applications open.

You can also prepare for the next UWC application cycle.

Use the time to:

  • Improve your academic results where possible
  • Prepare certified documents
  • Research alternative programmes
  • Prepare international qualification evaluations if applicable
  • Research funding opportunities
  • Monitor UWC’s official website
